Hi all,

For those (relatively few) of you who don't know yet, traffic has moved over to a site where we are actively welcomed, as opposed to here where we are at best grudgingly tolerated. I'm talking about, of course, Fetlife.com. I'm almost entirely over there now and having a ball. There are a number of excellent D/s groups there. Nowadays I don't get onto Tribe so much as once a week, and then only briefly.

Etiquette and protocol are thought by many to be the foundation of a strong power exchange dynamic. Certainly these concepts are some of the most talked about (and in some cases, most confusing) topics in the BDSM community. In this class we will attempt to depart from the "one true wayism" that often plagues discussions of protocol and etiquette and explore the practical purposes behind their theory and use. This class aims to assist attendees in finding a system of etiquette and protocol that works for them, and to give guidance in how to navigate interactions with others in protocol intensive settings.

You do not need to be a part of a D/s grouping to attend this class! Please dress comfortably and be prepared for a little light movement.

Unc's Colloquia is offering - qDot presenting on Teledildonics

Hi all,

Many of you are used to my presentations on electrical play. But now I'm branching out. On Thursday evening, 12 June 2008 with doors opening at 7:30 PM and running to 10, I'll host the very first of what I'll call Unc's Colloquia. It'll be held at a popular and well-known venue in Santa Clara - just before San Jose Pride weekend. This idea of the series is to present to the community topics available nowhere else. I guarentee they'll be thought provoking, inspiraional, and cutting edge. Those attending will see something new and hopefully set their minds racing to find out more ...to experiment ...to discover ...to explore ...to experience ...to dicuss, debate, consider. These will be no 101-level flogging (or other such - important though they may be). These will definitely be 201 and 301 level classes.

For the first of these, I'm pleased to present qDot (a.k.a. Kyle) presenting on Teledildonics.

Coined by Ted Nelson, Teldildonics is the general field of using computer and other automation techniques to do sexual stimulations remotely. This includes using computers and the internet for sexual contact between two or more people ... or even between people and 'virtual' people or creatures. (Imagine being able to have sex with your partner from the other side of the country or 'real' sexual contact with Marilyn Monroe or Superman. Impossible? Not with teledildonics and some real clever programming and interfaces.)

But is this just a pipe dream? Just what is the state of the art? What Teledildonic devices, software, and services exist?

A survey of Teledildonics and where it stands is the subject of this presentation which launches the Unc's Colloquia series. The presenter, qDot (a.k.a. Kyle) is well qualified to speak on this subject. A software professional, his Slashdong.com website is a key resource in the field of Teledidonics and computer-based sexuality. His site includes the latest and most up-to-date information on the subject. He has also been invited to present papers on the subject at Arse-Electronika conferences.

This is a definitely not-to-miss event. Not only will qDot talk about Teledildonics, he'll also show some of the devices that are available today. There'll also be live demonstrations to further illustrate the techniques. qDot will also be available to answer your questions.

This class will only be available on a pre-registration basis. The fee is a nominal $15.00 per person. The class size is limited to only 30 attendees and is filling up fast. Please understand that this class will discuss mature subject matter and, therefore, is an ADULTS ONLY event. You must be at least 21 years of age or older. The Citadel & Power Exchange Featured in Magazine Article

Beneath the stairs of the first floor, surrounded by dark hallways and dimly-lit
rooms, a group of men, women, and transsexuals prepare in the fenced dungeon that
makes up the bottom floor. They pull erotic toys out of their luggage—whips, dildos,
chains, and much more—while women peel off their street clothes in front of the
group. Minutes later, men wearing leather gear use floggers, a form of rubber whips,
to strike the bare backs of three nude women, two of whom are strapped to an x-shaped
plank. They squeal and moan in a simultaneous feeling of anguish and gratification.

Not every person in this vault-like room with flames painted on the walls is participating
in the play area designed for torturous pleasure. Some sit and watch while others
await a willing partner for themselves. Voyeurs stand behind the fence watching
in arousal, indulging the participants.

“Some men just stand there and masturbate while watching, and to me, that is a form
of applause,” explains Robin, a transvestite and cross-dressing bisexual. Wearing
a dirty blonde wig and crimson colored paint on her slender lips, Robin saunters
in and around the crowd, making sure that her friends aren’t bothered by unwanted
strangers or men trying to get a freebie—they typically play with the people they
come with. Amidst the security of her friends, she flirts with a potential participant.
Minutes later, the man is plastered on the plank, his wrists in chains while Robin
gives him oral sex. A group of men in their fifties and sixties sits on a nearby
couch, relaxing and smiling at the lascivious demonstration.

They are the first patrons of the night, arriving at the door of the Power Exchange
Sex Club, a place where people engage in uninhibited fornication with consenting
members. It’s a place where people can come to role-play, dress in kinky clothing,
amuse themselves with eccentric toys, have non-conformist sex such as BDSM (bondage
and submission dominance and sadomasochism), or just observe. The Power Exchange
is one of the biggest, and first legal, sex clubs on the West Coast. Because the
club is highly secure and open to a variety of sexual practices, it is a haven for
the exhibitionist and definitely doesn’t accommodate conservatives who prefer intercourse
behind closed doors.

This is an essential Thursday night of pleasure for a group of twenty or so friends
and acquaintances who meet for their monthly gathering to play in erotic pleasures
after a night of dining. They avoid discussing their lives at home or their occupations;
their goal is simply to get together and have a night of fun, explains GARi “G-Shot,”
the initiator of this routine of munching and playing. The medium-built man wearing
all black elaborates on his idea of getting a group of sexually eager individuals
together by making an agreement with Mike Powers, the owner and founder of the club.

This particular crowd welcomes a diverse range of people who are nondiscriminatory
and accepting to all sexual orientations and all forms of play. BDSM, one of the
more popular activities, utilizes both dominant and submissive practices. The dominant
party usually takes control while the submissive appears helpless and endures painful
whippings and penetrations.

There are no limits with toys and play, as long as the members are consenting. It
is safe to say that nothing is astounding to people that frequent the club. Aaron
Ericson, manager of the Power Exchange, recalls an event from one of the Fetish
Balls—a themed monthly venue at the club that attracts a massive crowd and has been
deemed the busiest night of the month. During a particular Fetish Ball evening,
a lesbian couple joined a kinky-couple’s contest: “The girlfriend stuck her fist
up her girlfriend’s vagina thirty-six times,” Ericson laughs.

Power Exchange is a family-run operation and opened its doors in 1995 after the
legal debate of gay sex clubs and unsafe sex practices spurred in the 1980s. Michael
Powers, former mayoral candidate of SF and the founder of the club, relocated it
in 1998 from a smaller location on Harrison Street to the more spacious Otis Street
building. Visitors of the club must come inside with an open mind and a mature demeanor.
Even though the club is extremely liberal toward sexual desires and preferences,
it still adheres to a strict set of rules, and all drugs and alcohol are prohibited
inside.

“Respecting the visitors of the club is highly emphasized,” says Ericson. “We don’t
tolerate immature behavior.” The tattooed manager with a ring hugging his nose explains
that this business is just like any retail business and that customer satisfaction
is vital to keeping the club up and running. The friendly Ericson ensures the safety
of his guests, greets customers, and exchanges smiles and words with regulars. “Safe
sex and sanitation is very important,” Ericson says, pointing out the numerous baskets
of condoms, paper towels, gloves, and hand-sanitizers available in every room.

Joe Weigand, a sixty-three-year-old dominant, makes sure he does an extensive cleaning
after a scene in which he causes his submissive partner to have an orgasm with a
stainless steel dildo-like instrument, splashing vaginal fluids on the floor. With
latex gloves and sanitizing spray, he wipes the ground with paper towels when his
partner and he have finished.

Weigand is part of the closely-knit BDSM scene, which includes The Citadel, a BDSM
club that opened in 2003, and the Society of Janus, a non-profit organization created
in 1974. He is a volunteer at both the Citadel and SOJ and recalls being intrigued
by BDSM at the young age of twelve. “I had fantasies of tying up little girls and
had always had sick thoughts.” He adds that sex was oppressed in the fifties and
sixties and it wasn’t until the seventies that he met people from the underground
sex scene who were into kinkiness like he was. He used to be a frequent visitor
of the Power Exchange and attended by himself, but he admits now that he only comes
with a group about once a month.

Three floors dwell in this forty-thousand square foot building resting on the corner
of Otis and Mission Street. A neon green sign welcomes people passing by. The rooms
are plentiful and exude an artistic theme of vibrant colors visible through the
dim fluorescent lighting. The Egyptian, Gothic, and Medieval-inspired rooms are
just a few of the options for partners there to engage in erogenous fantasies. The
room in the center of the building is called the Mixed Club, welcoming heterosexuals,
lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender men and women. If the door to one of
the many rooms is open, a couple or sex partners are inviting others in. If the
door is closed, the room is off limits, but voyeurs are still welcome to watch.
A stroll through the labyrinthine hallways of this club offers a deluge of sights
for the sex-crazed or curious, including everything from screens displaying pornographic
videos to couches, beds, sex machines, and gadgets.

Edges Needs Your Help

Over the last two decades many public play spaces have flourished and died in the bay area. Edges was built with love in the tradition of the best of these. Now we face a crossroads. The building we occupy is for sale. Ali and Alex are not able to secure a loan to buy it themselves, and unless someone steps up to purchase it from within the community it will be sold to outsiders. IT IS possible the new owners would let us stay, but at this time we have no commitment. As a community, we not only want, but need the support of Each Of You to see this through.

If you know of anyone in a position and with the inclination to buy the building and continue to rent it to Edges, please have them call Alex immediately. In the interim here is the current plan:

In order to continue providing a space to the community, (at this physical location or another) Edges needs financial support from our greater community. Ali has maintained Edges with NO debt for the past two years, yet neither Ali nor Alex take funds from their endeavors with Edges, but rather put all excess back into the space itself. We need the community to take on this same go-give mentality.

Unfortunately Ali is in school full time, just started a new job and is about to begin her internship for her laboratory career; she simply does not have the time to manage this extra workload! Therefore, we are looking for volunteers to manage fundraising events in the next few weeks. We need a General Manager of Fundraising, and people to organize specific events, organize the membership drive, advertise and spread the word, and more!

Visual Images, Sensations, Words

One word which I could add to the list of qualities that make DS interactions satisfying for many people is Fear. For me, fear is often the essential ingredient that makes an interaction work.

Consider, for instance, a classic dominatrix tactic. The submissive may berequired to stand naked, in a strictly prescribed position (hands behind his back or maybe on top of his head), eyes down, and not speaking. By itself, this may be no big deal. Ha ha, just the game we're playing. (This is what the play I see at parties usually looks like to me.) But add the element of fear, and it becomes exciting. Maybe fear of punishment: if I lift my eyes and look around for a moment, then I risk suffering the consequences. Or maybe not punishment at all, but just the awareness that the next step of the program will be for me to experience something that really hurts. With this awareness, suddenly I will be very focused and feel very submissive. With some femdoms, there didn't need to be any specific threat; just the tone of voice and attitude were enough to create that awareness.

Likewise, I can easily agree to be very obedient to the woman I am with. But if my obedience is purely a matter of choice on my part, then it's not very exciting for me. What makes the game (if I may use the word) exciting and fun is when I desperately feel the need not only to do everything I have been told, but to do my best to do it perfectly and completely enthusiastically. Because otherwise.... Consider it punishment or not, but there needs to be an element of fear that makes me strive as hard as I can, even if what I fear is only harsh words from my dominant.

"Fun"? One dominant I used to play with would say, "I don't know whether for it's going to be fun or not for you, but for me it's going to be a blast."

Which is an example of what a couple from Berkeley discussed in a talk they gave a year ago or so. Slightly modifying a basic concept from NLP, they said that there are three components at work in DS interactions: visual imagery, physical sensations, and language. As I recall (I don't have notes), they said that for every individual there is one of these elements that is primary in arousing the interest in playing, and possibly a second which becomes primary during the actual play.

And for me this was one of those moments where one suddenly realizes something that one has always known, but never knew that one knew.

The reason that so much play, especially play at parties, doesn't work for me is that for me is that it is usually so completely oriented around physical sensation.

Some tops tell me that they don't like to talk during their play because it makes it more difficult for them to concentrate on what they're doing. And it's common to hear older dominants complain about men who are attracted to the visual component of play and who prefer women who are young and pretty instead of more experienced dominants who are much more skilled in their techniques.

Like it or not, for many men, especially younger men, interacting with a woman one is strongly attracted to is the biggest part of the excitement of play. We can be judgmental about this, but it's the way things are. For me, it has a lot more to do with personality than with physical beauty. I meet a woman, maybe at a munch, and I don't know anything about her level of skill or what techniques she prefers, but something about her energy and the look in her eyes makes me think, "I definitely want to play with her."

My own opinion is that in fact, beyond a certain level, technique is something that tops care a whole lot more about than subs do. Sure, that double florentine looks really great to observers, but does the bottom receiving the blows really care that much about it? Well, maybe some bottoms do. I'm not the right person to ask.

For me, if a dominant is silent and really focused on doing her particular technique well, then I don't feel any connection with her. It's as if she's off in her own world and I don't exist for her except as a body.

The talk by that Berkeley couple made me realize that for me, the really exciting part of play has to do with things that the dominant says. One femdomme had gone to just about every QSM class that was offered for about a year, and loved using all sorts of different techniques, but her real forte, at least as far as I was concerned, was in talking to her subs. After witnessing (blindfolded) one of her professional
sessions, I suggested to her that she ought to make audiotapes for sale of some of the raps she did.

Another woman I played with was acknowledged, back at the time she existed, as being an ultimate sadist. But through out the intensely painful session she did with me, she was constantly talking to me, almost flirting with me. And likewise for every dominant I can think of who has ever done a memorable scene with me.

Even in my fantasies, most often the really climactic moment has to do with a particular sentence the dominant says. Physical sensations are also very important, but somehow they serve as a back-up to the dominant's words. She doesn't need to keep up a constant stream
of chatter while she plays, but I need to hear some comments from her from time to time.

One thing that' is very useful is the use of the word "slave," especially at the end of a command. For me, there's a world of difference between "Get me a glass of water," and "Get me a glass of water, slave." (Tone of voice is also important, of course.) Both sentences will produce the water, but in the first case I'm likely to be thinking, "Why can't you get your own water, bitch?" whereas in the second case I will be feeling very submissive and hoping the dominant will order me to do something else. Strange that a single word could be such an important part of what makes a scene work, but for me it is.

"Please" and "thank you," on the other hand, completely kill the energy for me. If a dominant feels the need to acknowledge something I have done for her, better she say something like, "That was very good," rather than "Thank you."

One sentence that was very powerful in my fantasies for a very long time was a woman in the role of an observer saying, "I'd like to see him whipped." But for this to work, of course, there has to be the actual whipping, and it has to be something that really hurts and that I don't like at all. I am very excited by the idea that a female observer can have power over me by making suggestions to the dominant. Things that will be very unpleasant for me. I guess I take it for granted that a woman dominating me will enjoy seeing me suffer, but it is much more powerful when a woman who is an outsider wants this.

The dominant might say to the observer, "There's a thing I've sometimes done which is extremely painful, and normally I only use it as a special punishment. I could demonstrate it for you if you'd like." And in my fantasy, the female observer says, "Yes, I'd like to see that." It's these words from the observer that are the crucial part of my fantasy, not the actual pain.

Or the dominant might say to me, "You know how horrible this technique is for you. But you want Sally to see you suffer it, don't don't you? You want her to know what a complete slave you are, don't you, and how much you are willing to suffer for me." But for this to work, the observer has to be a woman I am definitely attracted to.

Or to the observer she might say, "He's such a good slave. He'll let me do anything I want to him, won't you, slave?"

But in practice, although I've done a number of scenes with two women, in my real experience, the female observer has never been cruel in the way the observer in my fantasies is. If the woman I am playing with has just given me twenty very harsh strokes of the cane, and then asks her friend, "Do you think he needs any more?" in my experience, the friend will always say, "I think he's certainly had enough." Which will probably be a relief for me, but then later on, maybe the next day, I will think,
"Damn! That was a let down." Because in my fantasy, the observer says, "I think you should give him ten more."

The exceptions have come in cases where the observer is a gay male.
Gay males observing a scene are much more likely to say, "I think
he needs a little more." But then, in my experience, the woman
topping me will not actually do it. If she did..... That would be confusing
and difficult for me, because of him being a gay male.

Somehow a heterosexual male doesn't seem to fit in this picture at all.
I've bottomed in scenes where a heterosexual male was present, but it's
a very different energy. In any case, even if a male is involved in a scene,
it's important that the dominant energy come from the female. The one
case that was extremely powerful for me (to the extent that I almost
got extremely angry) was when a dominant took me over to the apartment
of a guy she was dating and, among other things, had me kiss his
shoes, humiliated me in front of him, and had me clean his stove
while she cuddled with him in the living room.

This is a case where words can be extremely useful. It would have been wise for her to have checked in with me at moments during the scene by asking how I felt about the situation. And when I would have answered, "I really don't like this," then she could have said, "Good! I knew that you wouldn't!" And then added, as she had on other occasions, "I'm having a whole lot of fun with this."

For my part, on that occasion I was certainly not finding the interaction fun. And if that particular dominant hadn't saved the day afterwards by praising me for being such a great submissive, I might have completely blown up and started yelling at her at the top of my voice. But certainly in retrospect, it was a truly great scene.

I think that this illustrates my belief that DS is always a cooperative process, even when it is extremely adversarial. In order for it to work,
it has to be a shared experience, even when it doesn't seem like one in the moment. We are engaged in a mutual journey, a big part of
which consists of a lot of suffering by me. The dominant needs to make sure that I remain constantly aware of this. Otherwise, I am likely to
flip out of sub space and the scene will crash and burn.

Other things a dominant woman might say to me: when I arrive at her dungeon, she might ask, "Are you ready to suffer for me today?" Perhaps adding, "I have something very special planned for you today." The idea is to create that fear that gives the scene its edge.

Or before doing something really nasty, "You're not going to like doing this at all. Well, you're going to have to learn to get past the idea that what you like or don't like is important. It's what I want that matters."

And the sentence I suggested to one femdomme, which turned out to be extremely effective, at moments when I felt it would be very difficult for me to do something she wanted: "Do it for me." She later started using this for many of her submissives.

In this workshop, students will learn to decorate the body with a variety of techniques and materials, while inducing the awesome endorphin rush that needle play brings.

Students wanting to attend this class are encouraged to attend the basic needle play class first. They will see two different designs demonstrated on volunteers during the workshop, and we will discuss a lot of potential fun things that can be done.

This is advanced play, and not for the squeamish, larger gage needles are used and in larger quantities. It is a workshop environment, so students will be given their own starter kits for the class.

This workshop is always a hit with those who attend, and the instructor has a wealth of experience and knowledge in doing it. She has pioneered many of the techniques being taught, and enjoys sharing them with the community.

For the first time Domination University is opening it's doors to submissives and offering seminars given by Dominants as part of their undergraduate program. Submissives often do their best work under graduates. <eg>
DomU is offering these seminars for submissives in rebuttal for the courses they attempted to give to our fellow Dominants. We all know that submissives cannot teach us...no one can.

Saint Dominants?

I'm a bit perplexed...

What are Dominants? Why do they dominate others?

If I'm to believe many of the posts I've seen scattered throughout Tribe and elsewhere, I can only conclude that dominants are "highly evolved", altruistic people who have, primarily, the emotional and spiritual development of their submissive at heart.

When someone occasionally posts a topic asking what people get out of D/s and/or SM, I see many replies from Dominants stating that they like to help the submissive breakthrough or grow or something similar. That's fine. That's even cool, I suppose, as long as the dominant isn't on some myopic spiritual or psychological trip.

What I don't hear dominants owning is the most fundamental stuff.

For example, ' The energy and power exchange that happens between myself and a submissive is one of the most galvanic, erotic thrills I've ever known.' or 'Nothing makes me hotter than controlling and dominating another person mentally, emotionally, and sexually.' or 'Beating my lover with a cane makes me wetter than a monsoon season and twice as hot!' (Disclaimer: I'm making all of this up)

I'm fairly well aware that, while my spirituality is deeply linked with my sexuality, I'm a submissive masochist because.....I'm a submissive masochist. The greatest sexual and emotional intimacy and gratification I experience comes from sharing this with a Dominant. Isn't this true, in the reverse, for most Dominants as well?

Advocating for BDSM Rights: the Sex Positive Front

When you are a part of a group that calls itself the Sex Positive Front, I'm sure one of the first things you want to know is, what does it mean to be sex positive?

The quickest, perhaps most flippant answer is "it isn't sex negative!" This isn't a bad answer, though, so long as we know what sex negativity is. Sex negativity is the societal force that keeps women from being able to be topless when men are allowed to be, the thing that makes homophobia so prevalent that many men and women fear what they themselves might be, the very thing that not only oppresses those who are open and frequent in their sexual activities, but those who decide they don't feel like it. Yes, sex negativity casts a bad light on "sluts" and adults who are deemed "frigid". It tells teens not to enjoy their newfound sexuality but to be everything their monogamously married partner will ever need in the bedroom. It deems anything that isn't in the narrow definition of sexually acceptable is wrong.

So, what does this make Sex Positivity?

Sex Positivity is the societal force that accepts others for who they are. It accepts that some men love men, some women love women, some men and women love both, that some people like more intense or different expressions of sexuality, and some prefer to have little or none. It accepts that some see sex as sacred and some see sex as simple fun. It even accepts that some see it as both. It also recognizes that so much of this positivity is best begun when young. Teaching teens to responsibly and safely enjoy their sexuality allows them to develop healthy sexual identities, and lessens the amount of insecurity that is normally thrust upon those who are sexually different.

Teach a person who they are, and give them confidence in that identity, and they will be less worried about who others are or what they do. They will even likely be more supportive of those around them, not concerned that it will have any bearing on who they themselves are.

Sex Positivity envisions how much more accepting, tolerant and beautiful society will be once the root of negativity is replaced by acceptance.

Volunteer for a Study on BDSM, Power, and Sexuality

Thanks to all of you have volunteered for this project already. So far, I have collected data from approximately 200 BDSM participants; however, I am having a difficult time finding participants who identify solely as either dominant or submissive. I have, instead, received many responses from people who switch roles. I’m hoping to get as balanced a sample as possible, representing all the diversity within our community. Thus, I am re-posting here in the hopes of attracting people who consider themselves purely dominant or purely submissive. I have to complete data collection by February 22nd, so this is my last, desperate plea to recruit volunteers.

If you identify as purely a top/dominant/master/mistress or purely a bottom/submissive/slave, I would very much appreciate if you would consider volunteering. Of course, this study is open to people of all orientations/roles, so if you are a switch (or identify in some other way), please do feel free to volunteer as well.

I am conducting a study on the relationship between power and sexuality. I am particularly interested in individuals involved in consensual sexual sadomasochism (or any form of BDSM), and I will be exploring sexuality in terms of sexual attitudes, feelings, fantasies, and behaviors.

You are invited to participate in this study if you self-define any aspect of your sexuality as BDSM and you are 21 years of age or older. The study is open to all sexual orientations; heterosexuals are particularly needed. If you choose to volunteer, after a brief email screening, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online questionnaire in the privacy of your home (the study takes approximately an hour and a half to complete). All of your responses will be kept completely confidential. As a small token of appreciation for your participation, you will be offered the opportunity to be entered into a drawing for the chance to win a $250 cash prize.

I am a graduate student in the social psychology program at the University of California, Santa Cruz; the current study is my dissertation project. what i look for in a good Owner

i was speaking with a few people recently about what characteristics make up the right kind of Dominant. The one thing we all agreed upon is that NONE of us agreed on pretty much anything at all.

Now before dispair sets in...we did happen to come to a conclusion. When a slave is able to proudly say Master owns me with a beaming smile upon her face...when she sighs with a bit of dreaminess at the thought of His touch. Well those are pretty good earmarks that her owner is doing something right.

i often quip about Master M being a pain in my ass and a bastard...grins that is [i]always followed by the remark isnt He ever wrong??? good grief why must He always be right and know whats best for me?!?!?!?? As a good Man a good Dominant, He SHOWS me daily His strength in character without needing to boast or brag or carry a big whip to get me to submit.

OH NO you say you are a pain slut!! That doesnt mean you are submissive...i learned that one the hard way...as i do all the lessons Master wants to teach me. While i enjoy the flog (yummy yummy) my punishment does not come from a beating. it does not come from neglect or abuse or being yelled at. Instead as a good Master should, He took His time to figure out exactly what i needed to motivate me without a word or a touch. His actions speak for Him.

After being His for over 3 years now the way i float when He enters a room or the sound of His name the scent of His cologne still make me soar...His absence my dispair, are earmarks of what a good Master is.

When a slave can feel complete in her service, when her devotion never wavers, when her submission comes from the depth of her soul not to just anyone but to that special One, that tells that He is obviously doing something right.

i look around at other C/couples and watch how they speak of their owners sometimes or the owners speak about their subs or slaves. After 17 years in this lifestyle i sometimes can tell wow that M/s couple are really going to last for a long time. i often quote Master M. it is like an echo that comes from deep within me passing along His sage advice. Others respond to it usually with a few typical answers...gee that sounds like my Master is the one that is my favorite...smiles...or i wish Master saw things that way (with a longing in their voice) that is my least favorite. There are of course other replies and such that go in between but the majortiy fall within those two realms.

So what sets Him apart from others? His dominance comes from within Him. He dominates from a place of strength that is internal...He doesnt boast it, force me into anything or beat it into someone. He respects my submission and treasures it. i CHOOSE to surrender control to Him because He has taken TIME, CARE, RESPECT, to earn it from me. He once told me that He prefers to build a relationship slowly so that it lasts going on to say that those that rush like a fire burn out quickly.

i admit i am not the easiest person to dominate. He knows that i am difficult and impuslive, sometimes moody, reluctant, deliberately obtuse, a sarcastic pain in the ass, oh the list continues (Master if You read this i am sure You can add a bunch of my finer qualities grins and blushes) but, when Master asks me for something i (with that one exception) do not hesitate a bit to surrender and give all that i can to please and serve Him. He deserves nothing less and so very much more.

There is one area that Master has been after me for months to do. i come up with excuses. It is not that i am a bad submissive or a horrible slave. i pretty much have said how high while on the way up when He tells me to jump but, we all have flaws. i am learning a harsh lesson like i should and am grateful to do as such. That is another thing i look for in a good Owner do i enjoy His punishment? no!! not one bit!! However, a punishment is sometimes necessary to make a submissive grow and develop a sign of a good Master is when a sub or in my case slave can appreciate the lesson being taught and respect her owner MORE for distributing that caring discipline.

So while i cannot say look for A, B, and C to find a good Owner i CAN say look for someone who is worthy of your submission and will treat it with respect. Look for someone you can respect and who is compatable for your needs and desires. Each relationship is unique as no two individuals are the same and there is no one size fits all dominant. Search for what completes you. BE CAREFUL for those who would take your submission and use it against you and as always BE SAFE AND SMILE purrrs kitty ps what sort of traits do you look for in an Owner and Dom/mes what do You look for in a submissive?

What is Ownership?

There seems to be such a varying idea of what ownership means. As each person has their own opionion on the topic i can only offer mine, to me personally, and i will state THIS IS ONLY MY VIEW, as slave, ownership is to mean that one has surrendered complete control to her/his dominant. Any freedoms, rights etc then comes from the dominants desire for how independent He/She wishes the slave to be.
For instance, if the dominant does not desire to handle the submisives money the dominant doesnt do it and leaves it up to the slave to do so. If the dominant doesnt wish to control whom the submissive speaks with or befriends then the slave must exercise their judgement and accept the consequences for all actions that this may bring upon them.

Ownership to me does not mean that the dominant MUST control all aspects of a submissive or slaves life just that They have the right to if They so desire to do so. As each relationship and situation is unique each Dominants responsability is to decide in what areas They wish to exercise Their control and it is up to the submissive to decide Whom they are going to trust and which personality meets their needs and fits them best for once they agree to submit and become that Persons property they have agreed to forfeit all rights unless given to them by that Dominant.

I am in a great and stable relationship in which I am collared by my owner but I am looking for (with permission) someone else for a different experience.

I am not very excited by public scenes so I'd like to interview with perspective new tops in a more private setting since I don't really go to scene parties.

"Sacred Pleasure: Sex, Myth, and the Politics of the Body" by Riane Eisler (1996). Anyone read it?

She proposes, basically, that the full range of sub feelings are pretty much sick and the result of the way we are culturally conditioned while growing up.

Please don't flame me, these are her thoughts, not mine. I found them disturbing and have not decided how to process them yet.

what a slave needs

i have thought long and hard lately about what a D/s or M/s relationship that is healthy means to me. while each relationship is unique and while each person needs vary and differ slightly i feel (an this is only my opinion) that there are some basic foundations to a solid relationship

Communication-not only is the submissive supposed to open herself freely to a dominant but it needs some level of communication returned to ensure that it is pleasing Him/Her and something more so that it is able to trust that person with their lives their emotional and physical well being.

Understanding-while a slave/submissive needs structure and asks for guidence and discipline, there also comes a time when they require tender loving care. Understanding, compassion

it is my opinion when a normally obedient slave or submissive starts to rebel it is not because they are being "bad" or are "no longer submissive" but rather perhaps because something is troubling them and feel they cannot communicate or be understood if they try. so they do the one thing that they can do...rebel

i feel often times that Dominants forget especially in long term relationships that the slave who is so usually well behaved still has feelings and needs. That sometimes something else is going on and they are struggling. More discipline or more structure isnt always what is needed sometimes what is needed is simple care tenderness.

It is my opionion that the strongest of Dominants can lay down Their iron fists sometimes and be that gentle teddy bear or friend to their submissive and not judge their feelings but rather just listen once in a while to them rant about how they are feeling. Sometimes it might help them be reassured and reaffirm their belief and faith in themselves and their relationship and give them the strength to surrender again.

slaves are still human. still have needs wants dreams desires. their desire to serve and be of good use to their Owners if they are real is always in the forefront of their minds and when being in this state of rebellion are often in pain and inner conflict for doing.

i suggest then that to fix a problem a strong dominant listen without judgement and offer solace not just a whip. there is punishment to be had for rebellion yes, and after what is troubling said submissive is fixed i am certain they would welcome it but to keep punishing the behavior without getting to the bottom of it is only a means to instill resentment and anger and a breakdown of a relationship.

Communication and Understanding run both ways in relationships the ones that survive and flourish are the ones where all parties involved take the time to ensure that it occurs regularly and freely without resenting the need for it.

Once the slave can get a footholding on their emotions and feel safe in that they will be taken care of they can allow their body to follow and be obedient. a good friend of mine said control the mind the body will follow. i further that with control the heart and soul and their is limitless power that a dominant can have.

i would lastly like to note that control comes from one of two places fear or respect. i think that the strongest most lasting relationships are built on respect. fear can bring on the fight or flight scenario that is prehardwired into us and can burn out a relationship...these are only my thoughts an opinions....

Tribal Censorship

I take it you have all received your little notice about obscenity from Tribe.

(Funny thing about that. Wade there has two sexual references right there on his home page.

So, of course I'm reporting him immediately to take them off. )

I ask that you now report all pictures of naked pregnant women, and naked children that are posted on family sites.

Report obscene comments, swear words, and hey, really anything that you find offensive.

If someone says something you find upsetting and obscene, report it! Hell, if it's just upsetting. Report it just to be on the safe side.

Let's send a message to Tribe that either you stand up for civil rights now, or you can wait til the US government shuts down this entire Tribe site on some technicality and do it then.

How totally fucked up that Tribe thinks that by appeasing Roberto Gonzales that he will leave them alone.

All Tribe is doing is paving the path so Gonzales can do his work more easily.

And guess who Tribe thinks is obscene my gay and lesbian friends? Guess which pictures and which speech is on their list? You think it's the "family" discussions about pregnancy? Think again honey.

Oh and I used the word "fuck" up there, so do report me or else you could find yourself in deep trouble.

I am refusing to remove any photos or comments that I have on Tribe. I ask that you do the same.

Make them do this dirty deed against freedom of expression.

If they do shut down your photos and comments, I ask that people join together to boycott Tribe.

Send them reports of EVERYTHING you find offensive. Make sure to add details. Fill their emails with obscenity and offensive statements.

Either you stand up for your civil rights now, or the end of your civil rights is at hand.

Tribe here is just one example of the new laws putting a chill on freedom of expression. Tribe should be ashamed for appeasing Gonzales and Bush.

Nevertheless it is now up to you to do something.

October 20, 2005 - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has announced that his office will specifically target "bestiality, urination, defecation, as well as sadistic and masochistic behavior" in pursuing new obscenity prosecutions. The Department of Justice began recruiting in late July for a new anti-obscenity squad to pursue obscenity prosecutions, and the FBI announced in September that it was forming an anti-obscenity task force to crack down on pornography.

Any website that has content containing "bestiality, urination, defecation, as well as sadistic and masochistic behavior" should be forewarned that prosecution is possible. Additionally, Federal sentencing guidelines state that any obscenity- related punishment should be "enhanced for sadomasochistic material."

Forty people and businesses have been convicted of obscenity since 2001, and 20 additional indictments are pending according to Andrew Oosterbaan, chief of the Justice Department's child exploitation and obscenity section. There were only four obscenity prosecutions during the eight years of the Clinton administration.

Though adult content is, in theory, protected by the First Amendment, only a jury can determine if a work is obscene or not under the subjective set of standards that vary from one community to the next established in the 1973 Supreme Court ruling, Miller v. California.

Text is not inherently more protected than images when it comes to obscenity charges. The erotic fiction website Red Rose Stories is facing obscenity charges after federal agents raided the owner's home on October 3rd, taking computer equipment and diskettes that contained all of their files and site information.

The Department of Justice is clearly hoping that websites will self-censor or remove their content entirely. Midori, a fetish model and SM educator who teaches classes on bondage, has removed her website, BeautyBound.com, citing fear of obscenity prosecution. The owner of three SM websites, known as GrandPa DeSade, removed his websites from the Internet. SuicideGirls.com also announced they are self-censoring their materials over concerns about a possible obscenity crackdown.

Recent prosecutions of obscenity on websites include: A former police officer in Lakeland, Florida, was arrested on October 7th on over 300 obscenity-related charges for the sexual content posted on his website. The same day, webmaster Chris Wilson, owner of amateur website NowThatsFuckedUp.com, was raided on charges of obscenity by a local Sheriff s office.

"I think it's crucial for us to stand up for consensual sadomasochism and other alternative sexual practices," says Barbara Nitke, fetish photographer. "This is a battle worth fighting, and I hope everyone who can will just censor out the most provocative material from their websites, but keep them up. I also appeal to the lawyers in our community to help us find ways to keep people's websites up."

Barbara Nitke and the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF) have proactively challenged federal obscenity laws as applied to the Internet, arguing that obscenity laws based on "local community standards" are too vague and their existence burdens protected speech, resulting in self-censorship due to the fear of prosecution. A district court three-judge panel in New York ruled that while Nitke and the NCSF members were at risk, more proof was needed that obscenity laws cause otherwise protected speech to be restrained through acts of self-censorship. The case is currently on appeal to the United States Supreme Court.

"The effect of silencing alternative lifestyle speech was exactly why we brought the lawsuit," says attorney John Wirenius, lead counsel for NCSF. "The self- censorship we are seeing underscores the importance of supporting our ongoing obscenity challenge."

BDSM Tribe Pointers tribe

It looks as if we're going to have to make our tribes private in order to survive the new Tribe Terms of Service and continue to operate. Private tribes do not show up on searches, so it's going to be difficult for new Tribe members to find us if they want to. Wise Master ... or NPD?

Every once in a while I read things in Tribe that remind me of something a friend sent me early in this journey. I've pasted it below. It's a list of indicators for Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I'm not advocating amateur psychoanalysis, but I believe that some of us (especially when we're new) mistake mental illness for wisdom and superior knowledge.

While most of us aren’t fooled by #1 (grandiose sense of self-importance) or #9 (arrogant, haughty behavior), sometimes it’s harder to spot the unhealthiness of #3 (believes he is “special” and can only be understood by other “special” people…), or #8 (believes that others are envious of him), or #2 (preoccupied with fantasies of … ideal love).

I’ve heard many tales of submissives whose “Doms” speak in riddles, explain away their bad reputations with tales of “envy”, lock their subs up on pedestals with the label of “true submissive,” or keep their subs cloistered because only “special” people belong in their “special” world. I think some of this behavior is unhealthy, and explains the disconnect that intelligent, healthy subs eventually feel with these guys. So I submit this list as a potential context for understanding the "Dominants" whose paths we cross.

standing at the threshold

okay. i have some questions. i might be asking these questions of a few different tribes, so if you see a similar posting elsewhere, i am not a form letter. i'm just not sure where to turn.
i'm a serial monogamist. i've had some fun in the polyamory communities of a few different cities, but a sexual connection isn't really satisfying to me unless it's an element in an unfolding mythology between two devoted symbiotes. two equal partners, bound by trust, committed to going "all the way", capable of anything because we "have each other's backs", as it were. even under these conditions, most of my relationships have left me wanting more, or something Other. when i've been close to feeling complete, it's been with women who offer themselves up utterly to a (seemingly) endless series of roles, scenes, games, psychodramas, degradations and demonstrations of their rightful place...as my property.
this hasn't ever been the contract at the beginning of these relationships. that's just where love seems to go, when i fall in love, until just before some point of no return, where we'll have to openly admit that master and servant isn't some game we're playing when the blinds are drawn. i am in fact her master. she is in fact my servant. just before this threshold is crossed, on three different occasions (3 different women, 3 different relationships,...), my lovers have experienced a flood of repressed abuse memories from childhood. revelation. breakdown. denial. re-repression. breakup. it's not a pretty pattern. i still love those women, in my heart of hearts. when i think back, i still feel this mixture of betrayal for the sudden ending of our experimentation, and guilt for having left so much burning wreckage where there used to be deep telepathy.
so, it would seem i'm inclined towards domination. it would seem that the absolute, boundary-smashing love my secret soul hungers for will only be achieved if me and my future symbiote step into the experiment with our eyes wide open.
but i don't know where to begin.
i'm not schooled in the etiquettes of the bdsm community. when i make the scene, i feel like there's some secret language being used of which i know the vocabulary, but its grammar is mysterious. i'm not really interested in bondage/spanking/etc., per se. it's the psychoprogramming and the absolute surrender of a ravishing and complex living doll who worships every nuance of her master's being that i miss. i miss it like childhood, even though i've only really tasted that surrender in fits and starts, with girls who grew suddenly, violently nostalgic for the "normal" place where our relationships began.
can anybody help me?
are there books i should read?
places i should go?
exercises i should practice?
someone i should talk to?
maybe i've been too specific, or too vague, but i think i've given you a taste of my point A and the point B i yearn for. how do i cross the gulf between? what questions should i be asking?

serving by not submitting

okay - this will sound weird to many people but it's real.

i went to ask Signore for permission to have an aperitif before dinner. (he prefers when I ask although I'm not "required" to.) He responded "Yes, but as payment" and reached toward my nipple telling me to "cover your mouth so you don't frighten the hummingbirds". I backed a partstep away, and grabbed his hands in panic. I wasn't thinking, it just felt wrong. He stopped and said "I get to" and I said "Yes please, hurt me if you want to but not as payment - I don't want a drink that badly." He leaned back in his seat and said "thank you".

We talked and as we discussed it, I realized that it felt like using a made up excuse to hurt me muddies the issue that he can just hurt me because he wants to. That's what was feeling "wrong". He did hurt me later - during the discussion at one point he reached over, and I put my hands behind my back and pushed my breasts toward him and he squeezed my nipple slowly harder and harder, until I could barely keep myself from screaming out loud. But I wasn't feeling panicked or freaked because this was simply him exerting his will. This is the way it's supposed to be. This felt right in the same way the other felt wrong. (BTW - for those who don't know, I *hate* nipple torture - with anyone other than my Owner, it's a limit.)

It's an important distinction for me. ANd for him. He thanked me for serving him so well - told me he was proud of me for stopping him and that he knows how hard it is to say no to your dom even when it's to serve his longterm goals.

Can you top your Dom?

Hello,
I am curious about other submissives experiences if any, with topping their Dom. I don't like it. But it is an act of submission for me because i don't like it. He is always ultimatley in charge. But if he is a switch i think it would be better for someone else to it who is dominant instead of me. The only way i could enjoy it would be to think i was punishing Him for times He made me upset. Can this be healthy? Or does it erode the power exchange? I find myself feeling less turned on by Him after these sessions. Fortunately they do not happen often, but they happen. Any thoughts?

Hi all,

Here’s my de rigueur introduction. I’ve been married for over fifteen years to a great guy. Over the years we’d play a bit with tying my wrists to the headboard of the bed or talk about the benefits of a rope bed. Life was very vanilla J. Then about three years ago we finally talked to each other about some of our more extreme fantasies… surprise, surprise! We both wanted to go *much* further into BDSM than either of us had ever let on. So, we plunged headlong into a new lifestyle. We’ve been learning a lot about ourselves and how we respond to pain and pleasure and power exchanges. I’m now comfortable saying that I’m a submissive masochist and (fortunately for both of us) my husband is a dominant twisted sadist. Life is good.

Every once in a while when we push our limits it gets a bit scary. I’ll end up with a more colourful pattern of bruises or some such thing and we step back for a bit and look at what we’re doing. Are we still at a safe level of play? So far, the answer has always been a resounding “yes”.
We’ve attended a few local munches and would like to attend more. But, between work and church and playing at home, who has time?

I hope that these groups will help out with our occasional “reality checks”. And give both of us a safe place to ask questions and chat with like-minded folks.

Training...myth or fact???

This may have been brought up before..but..lets see what it brings up this time.

Can a master or Dominant really train someone to be a submissive or slave, or just train them to be the type of sub/slave they desire.

I am going to paraphrase something I once heard Guy Baldwin say at a lecture...it pretty much reflects my own ideas on this.

"Submissives and slaves build themselves from within. They train themselves to be a slave/sub. Dominants/Masters do not really understand what it is to BE a submissive/slave. They have no frame of reference. They can't understand why anyone would even want to be submissive or a slave, but they are greatful they exist. How can a Dom/Master train someone to be something that they don't understand themselves?

A Dom/Master can basicly only train a sub/slave to do 3 things....fold my laundry, cook my eggs, and suck my cock, the way I like it to be done.".

I am interested to hear what you think about this. I imagine switches and people who have evolved from one side of D/s to the other side will probably have a much different view than those who are firmly rooted on just one side.

questions for a dominatrix

first, i'm interested because i'm just flat out curious-- would love to go to clubs or parties where dominance/submission is played out. i think my interest is visual, but i'm not sure- maybe at some point once i know more i may want to participate.
second, in a screenplay i'm writing right now, one of my main characters is a former dominatrix. i want to make her as realistic as possible-- i need to know so much more about her motivation and what she experiences while she's working. i'm not sure if i want her in the dominant role with customers or in a submissive role with another dominant fem. really, i need and want as much information as possible for personal reasons and so that my project reveals a realistic perspective on dominatrix(es? how do you pluralize that word???). this character is an absolutely amazing, strong woman, and i will in no way condemn or judge this lifestyle in the screenplay. specific questions i have include:

Committment verse sex? What's the difference and who's to say that it's right or wrong?

Even if it's decided up front that it's cool to have an open relationship and bring people into it on the side or smack dab in the middle, is it worth it in the long run?

What if you decide up front that the person you're with it's a long term companion so you don't care about these decisions, but then it turns out that you fall deeply in love and find a jealousy issue you're feeling urging its way up inside you?

What you do; what do say to the other person?

Do you even tell people up front that you don't want to pursue a serious relationship? What if that changes after you've been with your partner for awhile?

As we emailed recently, once Folsom is over, we will go into packing
mode. We have a "moving specialist" who will be organizing multiple
work parties to pack it all up and move it down the block. Work
parties will be starting sometime during the week after Folsom, and
you can help.

SF Citadel Move

After Folsom, and what you can do.

As you know, SF Citadel will soon be moving.

The most frequently asked question right now is "Where will you be moving?"

It would be wonderful to tell you that we have signed a lease, but as
of today, this is still not the case. But, we are still hopeful.

With our realtor, we have seen over a dozen buildings, put in
multiple offers, but are still awaiting a positive response. In the
meantime, we continue to look.

No matter what, once Folsom is over, we will go into packing mode. We
will be organizing multiple work parties to take down all the
lighting, chains and decorations. We'll be breaking down large items
in order to more easily move. We'll be doing all the things you would
expect in a move.

And we would like to ask for your help.

Please let us know if you can help out at work parties starting the
week of Sept 27th. Many of the tasks will be like a normal household
move, but some will involve a greater degree of effort and even some
heavy lifting. We can also use some large trucks and/or folks to
drive them.

As soon as we know more about the move, and whether we will be moving
directly into a new space, or moving into storage while we look for
the right place, we'll let you know. Sadly, we have to turn over the
building to the new owners on October 15.
